What Are Secondary Conditions?

Secondary conditions are disabilities that result from or are aggravated by a condition you're already service-connected for. Under 38 CFR § 3.310, the VA must grant service connection for these conditions if you can show the medical relationship.

For example, if you're service-connected for a knee injury, you may develop:

• Hip problems from altered gait compensation
• Lower back pain from changed posture and movement
• Depression from chronic pain and limited mobility
• Sleep disorders from pain interrupting sleep

Why Secondary Claims Matter

Many veterans leave significant compensation on the table by not filing for secondary conditions. Each secondary condition adds to your combined rating using VA math. A veteran at 70% could reach 100% by adding just a few secondary conditions.

Common Secondary Conditions

• PTSD → Sleep Apnea: PTSD is strongly linked to sleep disorders
• Diabetes → Peripheral Neuropathy: Diabetic nerve damage is common
• Tinnitus → Migraines: Chronic tinnitus can trigger headaches
• Back Pain → Radiculopathy: Nerve compression from spinal issues
• Any Chronic Condition → Depression/Anxiety: Living with disability affects mental health
