What Are Presumptive Conditions?

Presumptive conditions are disabilities that the VA automatically assumes are connected to your military service based on when, where, or how you served. You don't need to prove direct causation—just that you have the diagnosis and meet the service criteria.

This means faster claims processing and higher approval rates compared to direct service connection claims.

PACT Act Presumptive Conditions (2022)

The PACT Act is the largest expansion of VA benefits in decades. It adds 23+ conditions related to toxic exposure:

• Respiratory cancers: Lung, larynx, trachea, bronchus
• Other cancers: Head, neck, GI tract, kidney, reproductive
• Respiratory conditions: Asthma, rhinitis, sinusitis diagnosed after 9/11 service
• Constrictive bronchiolitis

Burn Pit & Toxic Exposure Locations

If you served in these locations, you may qualify for toxic exposure presumptives:

• Iraq, Afghanistan, and surrounding areas (post-9/11)
• Southwest Asia (Gulf War)
• Vietnam and surrounding waters (Agent Orange)
• Camp Lejeune (1953-1987)
• Radiation-risk activities

• AL Amyloidosis
• Bladder Cancer
• Chloracne
• Chronic B-cell Leukemias
• Diabetes Mellitus Type 2
• Hodgkin's Disease
• Hypothyroidism
• Ischemic Heart Disease
• Monoclonal Gammopathy
• Multiple Myeloma
• Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma
• Parkinson's Disease
• Parkinsonism
• Peripheral Neuropathy (early-onset)
• Porphyria Cutanea Tarda
• Prostate Cancer
• Respiratory Cancers
• Soft Tissue Sarcomas

Gulf War Presumptive Conditions

Veterans who served in Southwest Asia may qualify for these presumptives:

• Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
• Fibromyalgia
• Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (IBS)
• Undiagnosed Illnesses with qualifying symptoms
