Single tumor of plasma cells in bone (osseous) or soft tissue (extraosseous), related to but distinct from multiple myeloma. May be precursor to multiple myeloma. Bone plasmacytoma occurs mainly in spine or skull. Symptoms depend on location: bone pain, pathologic fractures, or mass effect. Treatment is radiation ± surgery.
When there is active disease or during treatment phase. Continues for 6 months after treatment cessation, then re-evaluate. If no recurrence, rate residuals. If develops into multiple myeloma, rate as symptomatic multiple myeloma (DC 7712).
