Chronic swelling from lymphatic system dysfunction causing protein-rich fluid accumulation in tissues. Primary (hereditary) or secondary (from surgery, radiation, infection, trauma). Most commonly affects limbs. Symptoms include swelling, heaviness, tightness, decreased range of motion, and recurrent infections (cellulitis). Progressive condition requiring lifelong management.
Severe lymphedema. Massive swelling with severe skin changes, weeping lymphorrhea, recurrent infections, profound functional impairment, may require surgery
Moderately severe lymphedema. Marked swelling with skin changes (hyperkeratosis, papillomatosis), severe functional limitation, frequent infections
Moderate lymphedema. Significant swelling requiring daily compression, moderate limitation in limb function, occasional cellulitis episodes
Mild lymphedema. Moderate swelling controlled with compression garments, minimal functional limitation
Minimal swelling without functional impairment
